Jelen (Deer) is a Czech acoustic band playing roots music. They record their own songs based on popular music such as country, folk, bluegrass and blues. Why did the band choose the name Jelen? “There was a song called Jelen at the time and someone came up with the idea that we could name ourselves after it. I’ll admit, it seemed crazy to me at first. But we took time to think about it and I gradually realised that it was a name so crazy it was great. Jelen is a simple word, everyone remembers it and everyone can think of something specific under it. Deer (Jelen) is also a beautiful majestic animal,” Jindra Polák, the singer, later explained. The band won the Angel in the Discovery of the Year category for 2014 and the Angel in the Group of the Year category for 2016. The band has been playing since 2012 until today, the group is still evolving and constantly gaining new fans.
